Mr Quinn d'Agatha Christie : influence du recul dans la qualité de la réflexion
On connaît Poirot. Tous admirent l'observatrice Miss Marple. Depuis toujours pourtant, je craque pour le mystérieux Mr Quinn.
En relisant pour la énième fois six nouvelles où l'étrange personnage apparaît, j'ai retrouvé un passage qui m'avait marqué, que j'avais trouvé pertinent et si juste. Avec le recul, je me rends bien compte que c'est totalement dans l'esprit des outils d'amplification de l'intelligence, sujet régulier de ce carnet.
Voici donc ce passage tiré de « L'arrivée de Mr Quinn (The Coming of Mr Quinn) ». Contexte : une panne de voiture a amené Mr Quinn à se réfugier dans un château proche où les participants à une petite réception discutent d'une vieille affaire de suicide et de meurtre...
-Un problème n'est pas nécessairement insoluble parce qu'il n'a pas encore été résolu.[Quinn]
- Allons donc! Puisqu'on n'a rien pu trouver à l'époque du drame, il n'est guère probable que maintenant, après dix ans, on découvre la vérité.
Mr Quinn hocha la tête.
- Je ne suis pas de votre avis ! dit-il. Un historien contemporain n'écrit jamais l'histoire d'une façon aussi véridique qu'un historien d'une génération qui suit. Le tout est de voir les choses dans leurs proportions exactes !
Alex Portal se pencha en avant la figure crispée.
- Vous avez raison Mr Quinn, s'écria-t-il, vous avez raison! Le temps ne résout pas un problème mais il le présente sous un autre aspect.
Evesham souriait avec incrédulité.
- Vous voulez donc dire Mr Quinn, que si nous essayions, par exemple ce soir, de chercher les causes de la mort de Dereck Capel, nous serions plus près de la vérité que nous ne l'étions quand l'événement se produisit?
- Plus près Mr Evesham, plus près. Vous ne seriez plus, en effet, sous l'influence de l'émotion, et vous pourriez évoquer le souvenir des faits avec calme et lucidité.
